As you may have seen in another thread here, apparently stolid has a CPU
that supports hardware virtualization, and a BIOS that won't let it be
used. Result is no 64-bit VMs on stolid (in VirtualBox under both Linux
and Windows), but that's no more than a slight inconvenience. What's
interesting is that on eris, where the CPU does not have hardware
virtualization, it looks like 64-bit VMs /can/ be created and used.

Although as I understand things, the 3.x didn't mark any major changes.

Nope, none whatsoever. Apparently what I have isn't the full source --
it wasn't in the repository and I had to get it elsewhere.

I also tried compiling it under Slackware64, because I included the
kernel (2.6.x) source as part of the install. That failed because of
some symbol not being defined. I could look into that.

What I'm considering doing is just moving the external modem and
USB-RS232 adapter from stolid to eris. I don't think I need dialup
   capability on both systems.

I have one friend who's using AOL but I doubt it's dialup as she's in
   Manhattan.

Along with CDs from various other ISPs. I haven't seen an AOL one in a
few years, but two or three months ago I was at K-Mart and they had free
   NetZero CDs by the registers.

But not absolutely everywhere. My aunt & uncle's summer place near
Montpelier, VT would be one. Unpaved roads, no cable TV available
there, and their place is next to a steep hill so there isn't a clear
   sight to the various satellites.

I also discovered that devices it automounts require root to 'umount'
them. Another thing to look into.

OK, found it. "Locally defined" includes symlinks /dev/cdrom and
/dev/modem exactly as I'm using them.

The NetZero/Juno Linux software isn't very imaginative either, or maybe
it was just assuming Lindows/Linspire. Here the USB-RS232 adapter shows
up as /dev/ttyUSB0, but I made /dev/modem a symlink to it.

But it does! Today on eris during a long download with 'wget', I
(wirelessly) accessed the router's config screen and changed my channel
from 9 to 2, and in much less than a minute the wireless card had
automatically changed to follow and continued the download. Ditto for
changing back from 2 to 9. I suppose that means it would be possible to
write an app to run on eris that would determine the least-busy channel
and change the router setting if possible, or at least tell the user
what to switch to. I don't think it's worth actually writing it, but I
   think it is possible.

Back in 2002 or '04 I killed an hour or two at that mall while my cousin
(the one in South Pasadena) shuttled the kiddies around.

When I had to give Lizzie a pill and I was the only one home, I used to
wrap her in a towel with only her head sticking out and hold that in
place by sitting on it, leaving both hands free to do the dirty work.
