Update: I got wireless working in Mageia 2! As best as I can tell, what
did it was deleting the existing wlan0 interface, creating a new wlan0
interface, and rebooting so it could figure out the Access Point (MAC of
   my computer, I think).

The Gnome app wouldn't even let me enter anything.

Nope, I installed that package, but Mageia insisted on the proprietary
driver I'd downloaded from the Ralink website.

Yep, any further questions specific to Mageia will go in a Mageia group.
I gather alt.os.linux.mageia is the most popular one (over
   gmane.linux.mageia.user) -- I see a lot of familiar names there. I
haven't thought about switching, but at least I can play around with it
after this system goes back to the other room. That will probably be in
a week or so, as expected delivery date for whatever's coming back from
   in-warranty service is this Friday.
