Yep, I think one cat5e cable is 50' (15m) long which should be long
enough. I've never unrolled it to check because I know it will never
   again be coiled so neatly.

I figure that if I can get wireless working, a wired connection isn't
essential. BTW stolid has wireless built into the motherboard. I may
eventually try to get that working too.

I tried, but gave up soon because I wanted to get stolid back up.
Before all the switching, those two were the only ones where I'd gotten
   wireless working so far.

Maybe, although nothing on eris is urgent or even necessary; it's just a
"fun" project -- and isn't that the main purpose of Linux after all? :-)
I intentionally chose distros far removed from Mandriva and similar
(and with a good reputation and a decent user base). Debian's GUI menu
puts "terminal" under "accessories", not "system tools", which gives an
indication of whom it's aimed at. I like that.

Absolutely none, until you gave those links (thank you!).

Whiskers in this NG recommended Arch, and Slackware seems popular with
experienced users. Someone said "When you learn a distro, you'll know
about that distro. When you learn Slackware, you'll know Linux."
