   Yep, definitely another purpose of updates, unpleasant but necessary.   
      
   Eventually it might be nice if "update" could say something like "I see   
   you have package X installed, which does such-and-such.  New package Y   
   does similar things.  Would you like to learn about and/or install   
   package Y?"  Come to think of it, that could even be a (frequently   
   updated) standalone application.

   Yep, score one point for Mageia.  I booted Mageia 2 on my test system,   
   and both cron-related bugs are indeed fixed there.  (My test system has   
   room for 7 native installs, each limited to 20 GB HD and 1 GB RAM.)
