I updated by clicking on "Help," then "About Thunderbird." That checks
for an update and begins downloading if there is one, after which I can
install it then or it will be installed the next time I open
Thunderbird. Firefox works the same way.

I have the vendor's versions installed to my user's /home directory, and
have root place a link to each startup script named something other than
"firefox" or "thunderbird" in /usr/bin, and I change my defaults
accordingly. That way they can update and operate separate from
Mageia's, and anything that depends on Mageia's versions seems to be
   unaffected.

I used to install the vendor's versions in /usr/lib the way
Mandriva/Mageia does, but that way the auto-update function doesn't work
and I had to do the update manually because I have zero script-writing
skills. Not something I'd do if I had any user on this computer but me.
And yes, I know it leaves me open to a security breach, but I like
   living on the edge.
