Herman, I don't know if it's related to your problem or not, but both
Firefox and Thunderbird (and the related suites Mozilla Suite and
SeaMonkey Suite) have had the problem that you speak of (processes
running in background) to greater or lessor extents, for several years,
   but usually on Windows systems.

If Jim's suggestions doesn't fix your problem, you might want to check
out the mozilla.support.firefox and mozilla.support.thunderbird groups
either on the news.mozilla.org server or on Google-Groups.
