I had a (somewhat) similar problem with a recent major Mageia 2 update
which included a new kernel. But mine was different in that the update
was interrupted for unknown (to me) reasons right in the middle of it.
When I attempted a reboot, neither kernel would finish the boot, but
each would stop at a different point. Safe mode didn't help, neither did
   booting with the DVD.

Not knowing what might be bad and what might not be, and knowing that I
know too little not to miss something that would bite me in the ass
later, I opted for a clean install (retaining /home) and updated that. A
very Microsoft-like solution, but it did the trick.
