A Microsoft-like solution would have been for the installer to silently
decide that what you need is a format of the whole disk, and to place
/home in the newly formatted root partition. Then when you discover what
happened, a paper clip will pop up, saying "It looks like you're trying to
kill yourself, can I help? Arsenic and strychnine are both good choices."
