I always do clean installs of new releases too. However, two or three
times when something (usually a new kernel as part of the latest
updates) has screwed up GRUB to the point where it can't get to the GRUB
menu, booting from my install DVD and "upgrading" my current
installation to the same release has reinstalled (or somehow fixed)
GRUB. I use a separate boot manager and have each distro's boot loader
on the distro's root partition. I don't recall ever needing to do this
   with Mandriva, though.
