However, two or three       times when something (usually a new kernel as part of the latest       updates) has screwed up GRUB to the point where it can't get to the GRUB       menu, booting from my install DVD and "upgrading" my current       installation to the same release has reinstalled (or somehow fixed)       GRUB. I use a separate boot manager and have each distro's boot loader       on the distro's root partition.
