I hadn't       thought of trying a different driver. "eris" (2007 desktop) is now my       test system, with a cheap but adequate PCI WiFi card I got from eBay.       Getting wireless configured for each distro on it (same hardware,       obviously) has ranged from trivial to "not yet". Maybe some of them       aren't using the correct driver.              [printing]              > A thought - my aging HP's both use #56(black), 57(color), and 58(photo)       > carts.              So does my father's Deskjet 5150. The Officejet I'm using now takes 21       (black), 27 (black but more ink), and 22 (color) but /not/ 28 (color,       more ink). I suppose someone at HP figured that an Officejet user would       be doing a lot more in black than in color. All of these look nearly       identical to the 56/57/58 but of course are incompatible. The 56 and 57       cost more than the 21/22 but have more ink so the cost per page is lower.              > but I refill the others myself, with       > good results with the black and sometimes mixed with color              I tried refilling the color cartridges but finally gave up because of       cross-contamination. I've had better success (but not 100%) refilling       the black, but for important stuff like photo quality, I use HP ink and       paper. For that family collage, I used store-brand photo paper and many       shots printed darker than they appeared on my monitor.              > beyond that, I have had good luck       > finding genuine carts, still sealed in the HP packaging, on eBay at       > lower prices than retail.              Yes, that's my usual source for HP ink carts too. :-) In a week or two       of fairly intensive bidding, I can buy enough cartridges to last for       several years. In fact, when the cheap Deskjet D1430 (bundled with that       2007 desktop) died, I had so many unused ink cartridges on hand that I       practically was forced to get a printer that could use them. That       printer came from eBay too.              > I used to buy carts from various refillers with good       > results at first, but in later years (I'd guess as the carts were       > refilled several times) not so much.              I've never bought other-brand or refilled cartridges, but then I don't       use the inkjet that much. I acquired a dinosaur HP Color LaserJet 5       which is big, noisy, and a power hog, but cost per page is so low that I       use it for almost everything.              > Classic white glue doesn't hold particularly well if moisture is a       > problem, even after it is fully set. My father taught       me the importance of the right adhesive for the job. His hobby was       sailing, so he had some glues that could handle immersion in water.              Adam       --       Registered Linux User #536473              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
