The "slow" is standard pace for the equipment used, when the
purpose is general fitness. Heavier weight would lead to weight
gain. Faster repetitions carries a risk of damage in the joints.
     Or so I am told.

Bear in mind that the 1.5 hours includes moving from machine to
machine and the wipe-down time for each as well as setting up the
weight and mechanical details on range of motion. There is
essentially "no free time" during the workout.

No, but I do reclining leg presses, which is somewhat comparable.

The one's I use are computerized, and nag if you are going too
fast, or too slow, and play nice tunes at the minimum and maximum
repetitions for your target range. They can be used in other
than their intended manner, but other than increasing the number
of reps per session by a third I cannot discern any improvement
   (for me) of doing so.

   Cheers!
