I suspect a lot of it is that Mandriva essentially opted out of the
(for the lack of a better word) hacker business. This is somewhat
similar to what happened to Red Hat after they did the same (with the
Fedora branding). Both Red Hat and Mandriva continue to exist, but
the users are completely different. On top of that, there is the
   continuing decline in Usenet readership.

Who could they sue? The Usenet Corp at 1060 W. Addison Street in
   Chicago?  The London office at 23 Leinster Gardens, Paddington?  ;-}
(Don't forget the Mandrake suit was against the software company, not
the news group, which still exists - my logs show 12 posts to it so
far this year, mostly spam.) This is an alternative newsgroup, and
such groups are carried at the whim of the administrator of the
individual news server. There are a couple thousand "public" news
servers out there, and there is no single central point one could nuke
to stop things. Usenet is an unaffiliated bunch of peer-to-peer
agreements. The only ones who might make anything are the lawyers
(it would be a significant cost for the trademark owner), and that
would depend on the lawyers finding friendly courts in the various
individual countries that might have jurisdiction over servers within
that country to bring legal action.

Which one did you finally get? My wife almost bought an Acer last
weekend, but she's looking for an Ultrabook (<12" screen).
