When I was looking at Gnome 3 for a friend who was looking for
an installation tool for her scanner I could not find a way to do that
either. Do you have any terminal access?

But that experience convinced me to stay with KDE.
I just read on the Mageia group that they are not supporting
Epson scanners in Mageia 3. PCLOS 2013.04, with KDE, recognized the
scanner in my Epson NX 515 without a hitch. Plus I have terminal access
to the rest of the GNU/Linux system when I need it.
The update system is easy to negotiate with access to the update
log where the system checks for updates and to the log that reports the
   updates done or avoided.
If you copy a file(livecd.sqfs) from a bootable CD making Flash Drive
copies of the installation media is easily done.
If the media is live it is more easily done.
