I was a city kid (well, town, really) but for some reason I really
wasn't in to Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, or Red Ryder (although I did
get a Daisy b-b gun and I'm pretty sure that was logo-ed as Red Ryder.

Of course, but comic books were expensive and took a good chunk out
of my allowance. On the other hand, the various breakfast cereals
were certainly targeting us. I learned a fair amount of wood-craft
from the cards that separated the layers in a Shredded Wheat box - I
think that was from Straight Arrow. Don't forget your Ralston
Straight Shooter Pledge of Allegiance that was often on the box
(especially the part where you promised to eat at least three bowls
   of Ralston every week).

I think some of my problem with the Shadow, and the Whistler was my
sister pulling some stunts. That laugh was beautiful.

Stan Freberg probably described it best in one of his "Pay Radio"
skits - "Does television stretch the imagination?" "Yup - all the
way up to 21 inches". That was the same skit where he had the ten
ton maraschino cherry dropped onto the top of the 700 foot mountain
of whip cream that was slid into Lake Michigan (refilled with hot
chocolate for this demo), to the cheering of 25,000 extras. ("Let's
see them try THAT on TV")
