Think of wep as closing the door, so the casual passerby can't see in.
Using wpa is then like putting a lock on the door, and using it.

If you're using wpa with a password that exists in a dictionary, think
of that as using a skeleton key. If you're using a 64 byte key made of
random characters, think of that as using a lock that can't be bumped.

Cracking wep on a wireless system that is not in use, can take a week,
or more, to collect enough packets. If the wireless system is in heavy
use, it can be cracked in a minute or two.
