One of the key differences is in the PATH. Go into either .bashrc or
.bash_profile, where the path is defined. Make sure that /sbin and
/usr/sbin are in the path. Make SURE that . is not in the path. Make
sure that the path does NOT end in :
Most of the configuration directories (.kde4, .gnome, ...) are created
the first time you use those programs. If you had set up your desktop
for root, you will have to recreate it. (Note that you really should not
be using a window manager for root-- ie you should not have root running
X as it is a security hole. You should either su to root, or sudo to
use root in which case most of those config files are irrelevant)

Now you know why everyone also says "MAKE A BACKUP" Imagine what your
situation will be when your hard disk disk dies and ALL you files, root,
user, whatever are all gone. So
   MAKE A BACKUP
