   I used a public nameserver, and the problem went away.   
   Called Verizon, battled my way to a network tech, provide proof it   
   worked with verizon's public servers and other servers and would not   
   work with dns servers seen in the router. Power off/on everything and   
   still had the problem. Change nameservers in the router and problem went away.   
      
   Solution, he put me on a different WAN segment, I rebooted router, problem   
   went away. He indicated he had no idea why. My guess was poisoned dns   
   server. Why google, no idea.   
      
   Since then I install bind, configure named, and do not worry about it.
