   That may well be what's happening. Google seems to be 'rolling out'   
   automatic HTTPS connections to their search 'home' page (it has been an   
   option for a couple of years).   
      
   If faeychild's ISP hasn't adjusted their web proxy to allow requests for   
   Google web pages to 'pass through' via HTTPS automatically (even if the   
   user didn't specify HTPPS) then there could be problems.
