I currently run Mandriva 2010. I have to buy a new motherboard for my home
built system and probably will have to switch over to a newer Linux kernel
   because of newer hardware.

I have been following OpenMandriva by running it under VirtualBox on my
   current Mandriva 2011.0 desktop. They've issued a RC1 version ( I'm
still using the Beta x86_64 version). The development team needs to
sharpen up a bit - they recently managed to delete the previous version
of urpmi before offering to install the new version (how?), but in
general I would be happy to install it on this laptop. There are
problems with versions of some software - I couldn't run the latest
version of BOINC under the Beta, but I feel sure that it will provide a
satisfactory successor to Mandriva 2011.0 when that sort of thing gets
sorted. The Beta was not a development system, because I had to install
basic packages such as make, libtool, pkg-config and then compile lots
of stuff, so I shall be waiting a week or three before committing one of
   my machines to it.
Overall, it looks a positive step to retain my favourite type of distro.
