Off hand it looks like it.

I would first see if I could not get grub legacy booting, your
   kernel/initrd 2.6.39 might work.

You installed some other distribution/release and it put grub2 in the MBR.
You invoked an upgrade of Mandriva and it put it there.
You asked your rescue cd to redo the MBR and it is using grub2. :(
   I don't know.

Anyway, you are at the root prompt of the rescue cd and you do the following:

   mkdir /old
   blkid | sort -V
   mount -t auto /dev/XdYZ /old # you have to solve for X, Y, Z
   chroot /old
   grub-install /dev/sda

If grub legacy is still on the drive, that will replace grub2 in the MBR.

   But, back to your question.
If you have to rebuild initrd, you mkdir, mount, chroot again and try
      cd /boot
      ls -al
      mkinitrd -f /boot/initrd-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r)
      ls -al
      if not the desired images,
      mkinitrd -f /boot/initrd-2.6.39.4-5.1-desktop-XXX.img 2.6.39.
   -5.1-desktop-XXX
You have to solve for XXX.

Take all the above with a grain of salt. I moved on to Mageia in 05-NOV-2011
