XPost: alt.os.linux.pclinuxos       From: bliss-sf4ever@dslextreme.com               Well it was not the PCLOS that did the dead but maybe a cold solder       joint on the main board of my old Compaq notebook. On the 10th       of May my SATA connector failed to work properly and I took it to the       shop. It was 5 years old and I doubt I could have rented a notebook       so cheaply as my price with memory update was <500 USD in 2009.               Wednesday I found a HP Pavilion notebook with an AMD A10 with       4 cores, 8 GiB of ram and 750 GiB hard drive, sadly afflicted with       Windows 8.1. The partition utility on the 8.1 is head and shoulder       over the Vista version and shrunk the Windows partion to a tenth of       the original size.        I was able to boot PCLOS on the live DVD but it could not       understand the GPT partitioning scheme. I looked on the web for a way       to deal with this and the hard-headed MS haters said to throw away       the GPT scheme and MS's pop creation. I tried 3 various distributions       that have some UEFI compatibility but Mageia 4 failed, same with Fedora       20 and Knoppix 7.3. I tried Open Mandriva but it did not work either,               Finally late afternoon I tried Kubuntu 14.04 LTS and it worked.       Have rebooted several times and it seems to work but I don't like the       sudo system of doing things. The KDE is 4.13.0 .the kernel is 3.13.0-20.               Got to go to bed.               bliss              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
