   Hi, thanks,

building this file from scratch with "make menuconfig" is what I tried
when building kernel 3.14.4. It works, but regarding those thousands of
options, it is very likely to overlook some of them.

I think, it is a more secure way to take a former .config file as a
template and only set / unset the new, additional options.

So, as a first step, I'd like to optimize an older kernel 2.6.39.4, which
is already in use, but I'm not sure, how to test several modifications.
I don't want to risk to lose the existing version by overwriting -- it
works, but only does not support webcams up to now.

Can the directory in /usr/src be copied from linux-2.6.39.4 to, let's say
linux-2.6.39.4-001 to get a completely different set of modules and
kernel / initrd files, or does "make" take the version string out of the
sources somewhere and overwrites the existing ones?

   Thanks in advance,
   best regards,
