   Hi!

The reason behind opening a new discussion is, that I also tried newer
versions of Mandriva, except Open Mandriva. I didn't check if this one
works fine now, but Mageia which I use on some machines has flaws
which make it hard to work with. For instance, on notebooks the screen
resolution in text mode (CTRL-ALT-F1..6) is set to max, regardless what
has been set in grub. Maybe this is being set within initrd.

After all, for working I still use Mandriva 2009.1 with security
patches overall (kernel, shell, ...) to work safely, but I can see the
limits of such an outdated system.

So, I'm looking around which OS could be my next one, and also, which
surface fits my needs. KDE4 and above has tons of whistles and bells
which makes every box slow, and Gnome is meanwhile (sorry for writing)
   even more annoying than Windows.
So, finally I found to Xfce which can be configured in the way that it
behaves and feels like KDE3.5 or Gnome 2.

I found a "PC-Welt"-dvd from year 2011 which provides some favourite
distros like Mandriva, Fedora, SuSE and Ubuntu to try out without
   installing and looking around.

Well, though 2011 is not decades ago, Ubuntu ("Xubuntu") for instance,
could not be updated any more. There was no access to any update repo.
For experiments, I had to download the whole iso for the current
version, and so I wonder if this is the case with systems like (Open)
   Mandriva, Mageia etc, too?

What I'm looking for is a "long term" OS which does not need to be
installed every year, but rather can be updated as long as possible to
keep it safe, and have a box which you can work with.

Is this the case with Mageia? Mandriva?
Can Xfce be selected as desktop?
   Any other distro recommended?

Any hints and opinions highly appreciated!

   Thanks, best regards,

   Markus
