That is my experience as well and my preference is to know what is
happening with the updates. Windows and Microsoft are the vendors of
machines(hard and soft) which do not bother to show the user clearly
what is being updated. Unlike in Windows in most systems you can check
what you are being informed is new otherwise i would not know about new
kernels and new versions of the tools I use nearly every day. And
sometimes you might have to log out or reboot on Linux but on Windows
you are stuck in a seemingly endless cycle of reboots to get Microsoft
   updates installed.
On the Amiga I learned to apply patches to keep up-to-date on
the OS. I ran similar tools on that machine but had to pay for new
versions. Linux is an improvement for me on that system that my
   contemporaries love indiscriminately.
The ultimate control over updates still lies in the Users hands
and if we wanted to unpack our various packages manually it would
increase the complexity of use in a way that would be unappealing.

PCLinux OS clearly states that using a terminal and apt-get
to do updates is not recommended by the way. On Mandriva we had to
use urpmi commands to get some needed libraries after conducting a
web search to find the singular library that would permit our
systems to run. Isn't that fun? ;^[
Well it was for me for a long time because I was learning. But such
updates certainly interfere with work or even play flow.
On Mageia I was able to get all of the tools I wanted with satisfied
dependencies if it was in the repositories. And the update
tool on Mageia put up a notice as does PCLinuxOS. I think I like
   Synaptic better though.
