Something is *seriously* broken with your system. Nothing going back to
windows 3.0 on a 80386sx with 512K of ram is slower than vista. Vista and
7ghz of processor and 2GB of ram is about equal to a previous generation OS
   on a 300mhz P1/cyrix686.

What exactly is slower? Moving windows around? Then check that you're using
the right X driver and not just the generic VESA output. Ditto with every
other system. Make sure you're using DMA on the hard drive ('hdparm -I
   /dev/hda').

Make sure you don't have any runaway processes. Run top and see what is
running. Check CPU usage and also memory usage.
