Gnome has been dropped from portage a quite long time ago, could have been
already last year (not sure about the date), this for the
Gentoo-Gnome2-developers want to force everyone into the Gnome2 world.

Sadly there not been any development on Gnome since Miguel left the project
and Havocs creation ain't at all backward compatible, this is yet another
reason why it has been dropped.

I do suggest you download a portage-tar ball for older Gentoo release, like
2005, copy the gnome-libs to your portage-overlay. Download also the source
package from some old ftp or get an old install of SourceRPMs for RedHat or
similar, store the tarball somewhere secure.

This will the only way you will be able to rebuild the gnome-libs.
