|    Help With Nvidia Driver    |
|    19 Sep 07 16:22:59    |
From: JLyn@NotForMail.com              Hello :-)              I would like to be able to use my nVidia driver. I'm using gentoo-2007.0       with kernel 2.6.19 with an amd64 bit processor.              Here is the problem I'm having: according the hand book, I should emerge       gentoo-sources (I've done this)              Next cd /usr/src/linux       make menuconfig              This gives me the kernel options menu. So far so good :-)              I (try) an follow these       instructions.              Loadable module support --->        [*] Enable loadable module support       Processor and Features --->        [*] MTRR (Memory Type Range Register) support              (No problem so far already built in :-)              Here is the issue I'm having.              Device Drivers --->       Character devices --->       <*> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)              According to the handbook I should tick the above and move on to the next       step,              The kernel option in the menu config looks like this:       <-> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)       I can't (*) or (M) The kernel source, gentoo-source-2.6.22-r5.              More confusion.                     On amd64, the IOMMU controls the agpgart setting. I see no IOMMU or agpgar       anywhere in the kernel.              This is also confusing me;              Important: For x86 and AMD64 processors, the in-kernel driver conflicts       with the binary driver provided by nVidia. If you will be compiling your       kernel for these CPUs, you must completely remove support for the       in-kernel driver as shown              Device Drivers --->       Graphics Support --->       < > nVidia Framebuffer Support       < > nVidia Riva support              Why can't I just tick those?              A good framebuffer alternative is VESA:                     Then, under "VESA driver type" select either vesafb or vesafb-tng. If you       are using an AMD64 processor, you should select vesafb rather than       vesafb-tng.              This is the guide I'm following.       http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml              I have a feeling that I'm over complicating the issue ;-) Any help you       could offer on how to use an Nvidia driver on Gentoo-amd64 would be much       appreciated!              Thank you in advance.              Jen              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
