   I suggest the use of equery, as it can show you the dependency tree for   
   a package, for example for php you would do: equery g php | less   
   It's part of the app-portage/gentoolkit package.   
      
   you will find that php uses sys-libs/db-4*   
      
   You could turn off the berkdb USE flag in php, if you wouldn't want that   
   to be built in, but if you want, reemerge sys-libs/db-4*
