I know and this is the case.

I have an on-board VIA UHCI controller and an Ali add-on card with an
   OHCI and EHCI combination.

It works for most of the time, just sometimes some things don't work as
   they should...

Now I've attached 3 devices and they all work fine:

   cat /proc/scsi/scsi

   Attached devices:
   Host: scsi6 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: WDC Model: WD800BEVE-11UYT0 Rev: 01.0
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
   Host: scsi7 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: Model: USB FLASH DRIVE Rev: 34CH
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 00
   Host: scsi8 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: Maxtor Model: OneTouch Rev: 0201
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 00

So a 160 GB Maxtor drive, a 80 GB LaCie brick (bus powered but with USB
power connector) and a 1 GB SanDisk stick...

I've done some more testing and it only seems to fail if I don't plug in
the optional USB power connector so I guess my crappy Ali card can't
give it the juice it needs.

Is it normal then something is found but not recognised?
