   I don't have a live cd or dvd to test with, but isn't gentoo-nofb a kernel   
   option? I'd try that and if that fails, look for "vesa" as a boot option   
   for the kernel. If that fails, just force a boot into text mode and make   
   your own x config file...   
      
   You must have a really odd Radeon video hardware, as it has worked well in   
   th past for me on a number of 8500 and close relatives.
