   It's portage's way of saying "this directory intentionally left blank."  I   
   like it - it tells me this is here on purpose.  There was a conscious   
   thought behind creating this directory on my machine.  It's also probably   
   taking *less* space than some sort of data store that labels   
   purposefully-empty directories.   
      
   So I'm not sure it's a shortcoming ;-)
