   The problem is that the devs marked the new e2fsprogs-libs and e2fsprogs   
   stable when the current portage can't resolve the blocks. The next   
   version of portage will automatically resolve the blocks but isn't ready   
   for stable status as yet. In the meantime the fix is relatively easy,   
   but must be done in a single, short session:   
      
    emerge -auDNv --fetchonly world   
    emerge -C ss com_err e2fsprogs   
    emerge -auDNv e2fsprogs_libs e2fsprogs   
    emerge -auDNv world   
      
   I've done 30+ machines this way so far without any problems.
