   Have a look at Documentation/filesystems/proc.txt in the Linux sources,   
   specifically the section on /proc/sys/vm. Also   
   Documentation/laptops/laptop-mode.txt. Chances are what you want is   
   already there, tunable in /etc/sysctl.conf. Might be interesting to   
   increase dirty_ratio, dirty_background_ratio and   
   dirty_writeback_centisecs. I haven't played with these yet but now that   
   you mention it...I've also been running a little server with a root FS   
   on a CF disk for a while now, I'll check it out!
