I have the same card and ati-drivers-8.561 works fine and is more stable
than the really too old (for this card) 8.501 you have.

Remove all the options from xorg.conf so you have a clean one. Update
   to ati-drivers-8.561 and then run:

      aticonfig --initial

   followed by:

      eselect opengl set ati

Do not reintroduce any options in xorg.conf. Only what aticonfig puts
in there. It's best to start with a totally clean xorg.conf (like
you've never used ati-drivers) before running aticonfig --initial.
