What do you find in the debian kernel .config that you don't have in your
   .config?

I think you would save a lot of time instead of trying to make your tests,
start all over with the kernel config (use the debian or the default Gentoo
one) and then remove things you for sure know you don't need and avoid things
which are new like Tickless settings and use the old settings for things like
   SLAB.

No, it don't have to be recompiled, as long as you didn't upgrade from kernel
2.6 to 2.4, then you need to build the modutils package.

Se what David wrote and what I wrote in my first post in this thread.

It's not really wrong, as portage will draw the latest stable package and
don't forget that there has happen a lot since 2.6.23.

You haven't enabled the symlink flag, so it won't change the symlink.

   > What has happened to Gentoo?

Nothing, it's as it always been, at least since I installed Gentoo1.4 (it's
changed name a few times, but still the same original install).

It's as any other distribution, it will update outdated packages when you do
an update. Doing your rebuild will most likely not make your system more
stable, it will just make that your packages are updated. Fix your kernel
   first.
