   I just installed on a laptop with two of these   
       model name      : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU     P8600  @ 2.40GHz   
   so very similar to yours.   
      
   For the initial installation, I used   
       CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu"   
       CFLAGS="-march=nocona -O2 -pipe"   
   and the stage1-amd64-2008.0.tar.bz2 file.   
      
   Afterwards I added "sys-devel/gcc  ~amd64" to /etc/portage/package.keywords   
   so that I could change CFLAGS to this:   
       CFLAGS="-march=core2 -O2 -pipe" # this only works with GCC 4.3.x   
   Afterwards I re-emerged everything again (that's why I only used stage1).   
   I think it got faster with the changed CFLAGS...   
      
   I so far used the /usr/portage/profiles/default/linux/amd64/2008.0/no-multilib   
   profile but if I had to do it again I probably would use multilib now, because   
   there are still some difficulties: Java plugin (icedtea6-bin) doesn't work on   
   secure sites, acroread doesn't exist, and one has to compile OpenOffice (boy   
   that takes loooong and isn't much faster than openoffice-bin).
