I think that alt.os.linux.gentoo had been a better newsgroup to ask this
   question (so I added it).

Each time I have installed Gentoo on new hardware, I have run lsmod when
booted the install media, this shows which modules are loaded and gives a good
guideline which options to keep in the kernel when I building the new one (of
   course lshw/lspci gives more info).

There is a number of Realtek drivers nowadays

   RTL-8139 C+
   RTL-8129/8130/8139
   Realtek 8169

   Which may require
   Realtek PHYs

and sometimes there can be a unified driver that supports more than one kind
   of devices.

This indicates that you may have the wrong driver.

I do recommend you to enable
   General setup  --->
     <*> Kernel .config support

there been times I have managed by mistake delete the source directory (I
sometimes test my own kernel patches) and loose the .config file together with
the directory or that I have made some changes in the config that I want to
rewert hos it was in another compile of the same kernel version, then it's so
handy to get the file from /proc/config.gz
