   My son taught me an easy way to rebuild the boot   
   sector when it has been wiped (always because my error).   
      
   Using another system, such as LiveSlack, load the   
   drive with the damaged sector into, say, mountpoint.   
      
   cd mountpoint   
   mount --bind /sys sys   
   mount --bind /proc proc   
   mount --bind /dev dev   
   chroot mountpoint   
   lilo   
      
   or grub-install, whatever.   
      
   I added the three mount lines to live slack usb.
