   If you're very good at documenting what changes you make, AND   
   sufficiently disciplined to always document your changes, manually   
   editting files works fine.  I've been doing that for well over two   
   decades now.  Some tasks get streamlined into more efficient ways of   
   working, while others still just get editted in.
