   On my ancient Dell...there's a function button/F3 combo which will turn the   
   mousepad on/off.  The F3 has a stylized mouse on it.   
      
   As to the reboot.  I'm a firm believer in doing a complete   
   shutdown/poweroff/boot.  For the harsher folks there's the "trip over the power   
   cord" to test recovery after a power outage.  Just make sure you have a good   
   backup before doing this, then there's always a chance of damage to one of   
   those   
   little electronic gizmos stuffed inside that box using that procedure.
