   I suppose I had better close this thread out.   
   1 - the problem went away, the computer returned to normal.   
   2 - I got a new one and that has no problems at all.  Not all of the services   
   work correctly yet but the important ones do and I'll fix the others when I   
   get back from a short holiday.
