   I'm not sure either.  I assumed he meant login as root into the GUI, something

   tend to, depending on how much I wanna type at it, either:   
   1.  Do a Ctrl-Alt F1 and login to the terminal window as root.  I'll do this   
   from a reboot often, without being logged into the GUI as me, since the   
   computer   
   is about as static as it'll ever get.   
   2.  Do a "su -" from a console.   
   3.  Use sudo.  Often done in really simple bash scripts.   
   It all depends.  Options 2 & 3 work well on a ssh connect to another computer.
