When asking a question, it is best if you outline why you ask as well
as asking. For example, you have never said if you had already tried
locate already and did not like it for one reason or another. Or if you
had searched on the web and seen some programs you were considering and
wanted advice on the strengths and weaknesses. Ie, the more information
you give us, the better the advice will be. If all you want is to search
of parts of names, locate works well. If you want a much more powerful
search tool. or just want to search certain directories
then there is "find" which has huge power, but also has a command syntax
which can be rather intimidating. It can also be slower since it
actually searches the directory now, rather than use a presearched
database. There is the balloo stuff, which I never touch but it does
keep a HUGE presearch database which it uses. I have never figured out
how to use it, but someone must find it usefull to make up for its
taking some substatial fraction of your disk space.
