Just a followup to this.... I tried out the beta RHEL 8 and it is whittled   
   down like SLE 15 i.e. only comes with ghastly Gnome desktop.   
   RHEL 8 was forked off Fedora 28 supposedly.  If I shove the Fedora 28 repo   
   into RHEL8, one can only install simple things, basically a self-contained   
   rpm with minimal dependencies.  Try to install another desktop into RHEL8 will   
   go splat. You get dozens of messages that something is either not found   
   or the library versions are different.   
   With SLED15, I could at least install the LXDE desktop. Maybe it breaks   
   something down the track, but that is a big difference over the red team.   
      
   Anyway, enough faffing around, I will just use Leap 15 in future, it seems to   
   be the best option in this class of distros.
