   Once upon a time...it was about the only editor you could be assured to find   
   when you booted the system up single-user mode as root.  A statically compiled   
   version of vi, sometimes those pesky run-time libraries aren't there, from   
   there   
   you could fix things enough to bring up it up multi-user and with luck   
   eventually a gui.
