   Given the clue that ".viminfo" is the config file (I was looking elsewhere) -   
   and knowing that I have not personalised the beast at all - renaming the file   
   to .viminfo.bad (or something) allowed me to simulate the effect without   
   actually bothering to set    
   up a full test bed.
