   file to .viminfo.bad (or something) allowed me to simulate the effect without   
   actually bothering to

   .vimrc is the config file. .viminfo is the memory file, where vim   
   remembers what you set up last time, and what files you edit and where   
   in the files you were and what you di in the files.
