I tried the appropriate irc channel (the General support channel) and
tried to implement the suggestions, "tried" because I ceased being any
kind of expert years ago and even have problems getting the rescue
   system to be helpful nowadays.
Today I found my Leap 15.6 install dvd and did an "Upgrade" from 16.0 to
15.6, it complained in a couple of places but the system worked
immediately and I just had to add Packman and the Seamonkey browser.

My user-account works as it should. If anything else does not, I've
fixed those problems before and should know what to do now.
I had assumed that the irc channel had a log in the same way as the
-admin one does so I could work on the suggestions at my leisure. It
does not - cousin-luigi's suggestions are now lost to me.

One day I'll have another go, but it is unlikely to be soon.
