I started with Gnome and never had any problems with it.

I've tried KDE a few times with mixed results.

BTW: The best computer education I ever had was that Linux For Dummies
book which contained the RH 5.2 cd

From the time I got the book until I got it installed and fully
   configured was six months !!!

When I started, I did not even know what a partition was !

Years later, I went back and did a RH5.2 installation and saw why I had
an impossible time getting X configured the first time.

If I initially close too high of a resolution, then went back using a
lower resolution, the original configuration was still kept and would
have to have been manually deleted. As a newbie, to figure that out was
   beyond my ability.

Finally I did a fresh install and started out with the lowest possible
resolution and was amazed when I finally got a GUI !
