On Mnemosyne's memorable day known as Mon, 21 Jun 2004 07:16:11 GMT Calliope
probably had an epic bad hair day to prompt her sister Thalia in mockingly
inspiring "D. Kirkpatrick" to write in his/her
   epistle thus:

   > Do[n]es anyone know of a Windows patch that will fix this that is still
   > available for download? Or is there something I can add to SYSTEM.INI
   > to trick it into thinking its there?

Yes, re-install Dec Pathworks Ethernet options ;-)

   > Or does anyone have a copy of "decpw.386" they can send me and tell me
   > where to install it to get this error to go away.
   >
   > DMK

Two ways to go about this:

   1) Do a clean and full re-install of Windows 95 OS, but this time with the
correct drivers/options for your Ethernet card. Windows 95 is pretty touchy
when it comes to the network drivers. Changing/Repairing is often
useless/major hassle, a clean re-install often does the trick best.

   or

   2) Clean out all references to "decpw.386" in the Windows registry. Here's
   how.

[First and **ALWAYS** backup your registry by copying your "SYSTEM.DAT" and
"USER.DAT" from C:\WINDOWS directory to a safe place, which is anywhere but
not C:\WINDOWS or C:\. To find these files, you probably have to make them
visible (un-hidden) first. Open a DOS-box and type at the prompt (if path is
   C:\WINDOWS):

   ATTRIB -H -R USER.DAT

If 'nothing' happens and the prompt returns to a new line with C:\WINDOWS
you may let out a victorious Tarzan-scream celebrating your gloriously
succesful result and boosting self-pride way up in the red zone. Now repeat
same command with SYSTEM.DAT and type:

   ATTRIB -H -R SYSTEM.DAT

When again succesful, repeat unrestrained joy-outburst if circumstances
   permit.
Now hunt 'em down in Windows Explorer and back them up. So if things do go
soft on you or even FUBAR, copy them back (in MS-DOS-mode or REAL-mode) to
C:\WINDOWS from the DOS-prompt before Windows start-up to put things as they
were before you started screwing things up. You will thank me for pressing
this extra effort when you ever get there.]

   Right. Let's go wiping now.
Go to Start | Run | type "REGEDIT.EXE" and make sure 'This computer' is
   highlighted/selected.
Press F3, CTRL-F (Search) or Edit-menu and then Search. Tick all options to
search for Keys, Values, &c. Now type "decpw.386" (without the quotes, of
course) and delete each instance you come across, by pressing DEL and ENTER
and continue the search by pressing F3. Exit the program when no more
references can be found and the search is finished.
Reboot Windows and the warnings should be history.
